Health and Safety Executive brings rogue gas fitters to justice

HSE successfully prosecuted 28 people for breaching gas legislation in 2008/09, covering 66 separate offences. 173 enforcement notices were also served during this period. (see notes to editors). Research for Gas Safe Register found that regular servicing of gas appliances is not a priority in far too many households. Almost a fifth (19.05%) of households with a gas boiler had not had it serviced for at least three years and an alarming 13% of households had never had their boiler serviced or would only do so if there was a problem. Figures from the Health and Safety Executive show that 14 people died from CO poisoning from gas appliances in Britain in 2007/08, with a further 234 suffering health problems as a result of CO exposure.
