Oscar of the Gas Industry awarded to Channel Four soap
(23/09/2008)
The UK’s gas safety watchdog CORGI, has awarded Channel Four soap, Hollyoaks , a newly accredited award for Contribution to Gas Safety at the annual CORGI Awards ceremony at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry last week.
Hollyoaks incorporated a carbon monoxide storyline into their script in order to promote carbon monoxide awareness amongst the younger generation, especially focusing on students, who are one of the most vulnerable groups at risk from carbon monoxide poisoning.
This prestigious award was sponsored, for the first time, by The CORGI Trust. Trust Manager Nigel Dumbrell said: “We are so proud to sponsor such a prestigious award in honor of those helping us promote the issues of carbon monoxide poisoning among the UK public. According to CORGI, each year around 30 people die and many more are left seriously injured from this ‘Silent Killer’.
The judges were extremely impressed by the standard and accuracy of the script and how the storyline affected its intended audience, with reports of it actually saving someone’s life that had seen the programme and realised they were suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning.
The CORGI Awards have been dubbed the ‘Oscars of the Gas Industry’ and are a wonderful opportunity to recognise excellence and reward those people, products and services committed to gas safety and improving the industry.
CORGI Awards organiser Dan Caesar said: “CORGI is really pleased to be able to present Hollyoaks with this new award in recognition of its dedication to gas safety. We hope to be able to continue presenting this award from now on”.
