The Boiler Scrappage Scheme is open to anyone who replaces an inefficient band G boiler. It is a great opportunity for householders and installers to make a real difference to their energy consumption, energy cost and carbon emissions.

From Government figures, heating and hot water account for 85% of domestic energy consumption. Replacing the oldest boilers will help stimulate interest in heating systems and their importance in the fight against climate change.

Honeywell points out that 8.5 million homes do not have a room thermostat. Just turning a thermostat down by 1C reduces heating bills by 10% – but how can you do that if you have no thermostat fitted?

Industry testing shows that modern Time Proportional Integral (TPI) thermostats can also save up to 10% over a traditional mechanical thermostat.

The Government has set aside £50m to enable grants to be available to 125,000 homes of the estimated 3.5 million which still have an old inefficient G rated boiler. To secure a boiler grant, register for the scheme on the Energy Saving Trust (EST) website. When the work is completed within 12 weeks, send the proof of the work to EST which will issue a cheque.

“When a G rated boiler is replaced with a high efficiency boiler, the new boiler needs high efficiency controls to allow it to work properly, observes Matthew Gordon, Marketing & Promotions Manger for Honeywell Environmental Controls.

“The oldest, least efficient boilers tend to be fitted in the oldest, least efficiently controlled systems. The grant of £400 towards the cost of the work is more than the cost of the system controls. Make the most of your new boiler by upgrading the controls at the same time. Many old systems were fitted without a room thermostat or an old type so, when the boiler is replaced fit a new one with the advanced energy saving TPI control.”
