Limescale in hard water areas reduces the efficiency of heating and hot water systems and increases running costs, and with over 60 per cent of the UK being supplied with hard water this is an important issue to address. Research has shown that a layer of limescale just 1mm thick will reduce a boiler’s efficiency by 7.5 per cent, while a 12mm layer will increase heating costs by 65 per cent.

HSE successfully prosecuted 28 people for breaching gas legislation in 2008/09, covering 66 separate offences. 173 enforcement notices were also served during this period. (see notes to editors). A number of these cases involved engineers found carrying out gas work without being registered or working outside their competency - doing jobs which they are not formally qualified for.
