Controls play an essential role in making sure heating systems operate efficiently
(20/10/2010)

As we move towards zero carbon homes from 2016, much of the focus has been on the aim to reduce carbon emissions from new buildings by 25%, especially with the new version of Part L of the Building Regulations now in force (from October 2010). But, according to Colin Timmins, director of BEAMA's UK controls manufacturers' association TACMA, it's another, less-heralded feature of Part L that shows Government and CLG are serious about reducing energy costs for householders by making a small, bu... Change to Part L of the Building Regulations requires all new boilers to be Band A rated
(18/10/2010)

Until the changes to Part L come in to force in October 2010, it has been possible to fit SEDBUK 2005 Band B boilers. This clause has now been removed, and from 1 October 2010, all boilers must now be the equivalent of SEDBUK 2005 Band A, with a minimum efficiency of 90%. This applies to existing dwellings as well as newbuild, and effectively outlaws the installation of anything other than SEDBUK 2005 Band A appliances. Where building work has started or been agreed before 1 October 2010, b... [more]

Large quantity of condensate is making its way into drains
(24/10/2007)

There are an estimated 17 million gas boilers in the UK, with around 1.5 million new boilers installed each year. A condensing boiler from an average household will produce approximately 800 litres of acid per year at pH4. This is not a problem for an odd house or two but the amount of acid condensate put down the drain is thought to be growing at a rate in excess of half a million litres per week as more and more condensing boilers are installed. It’s conservatively thought that in two ... [more]
